Silver Beach News for 12.1.16

Dear Families,
Welcome to December! This month is filled with opportunities for our students to be Leaders In Action.  New Leadership jobs have been posted and grades 1-5 have a variety of opportunities; Winter Leadership Jobs.pdf explaining the jobs and application process.   Also happening this month is our 5th grade Helping Hawks Leadership Food Drive benefitting Silver Beach and The Bellingham Food Bank; 26 students are serving a variety of roles to make this endeavor a success. Our goal is 750 pounds and drop off runs through Tuesday, Dec. 13th. If your family could benefit by receiving any collected food, please contact our school counselor, Brian Gilmore, at 676-6470 ext.2328.

Tomorrow, Fri. Dec. 2nd is the deadline for ordering Spirit Gear that will be delivered before Winter Break.  There is a new option to print ‘Leaders In Action’ on the back! https://silverbeachgear.itemorder.com/

Holiday Assistance: We understand that there are times when families are challenged to meet the basic needs of their children. The Family Support Network will be offering limited basic need assistance during the holiday season. If this could be helpful, please contact our school counselor, Mr. Gilmore 676-6470 ext. 2328. Your identity will be kept anonymous.  Deadline is Friday, December 2nd.
Snack Program: If it is difficult for you to pack a daily snack for your child, the FSN purchases a supply of snacks (i.e.-goldfish, granola bars, cereal bars, fruit leather) for free and reduced meal participants. Please contact Brian Gilmore (676-6470 ext.2328) if you would like a daily snack available for your student.
Afterschool Enrichment: Tuition assistance for students to participate in Silver Beach Afterschool Programs.
Little Bugs Clothing: Gift certificates are available throughout the year.

Kids Night Out @ Western (KNOW)
WWU Youth Programs invites students in grades K-5 to explore science activities with Kids Night Out @ Western this winter! An hour of swimming at the Wade King Student Recreation Center is offered to participants. The winter program will be held from 7 to 9:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20. WWU Early Release Enrichment
WWU Youth Programs invites students in grades K-5 to explore science and art activities with Early Release Enrichment this winter! The program coincides with early release Thursdays, offering an alternative to traditional childcare while also providing an early introduction to campus life. Sessions are from 2 to 4:45 p.m. Thursdays, from Jan. 19 to Feb. 23. For more info, visit wwu.edu/youth or call (360)650-3308.

WWU GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math & Science) Night Out
WWU Youth Programs invites students in grades 3-8 to explore hands-on science activities with GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math and Science) Night Out this winter! Reminders:
• For the next few weeks, Bellingham Public Schools will be surveying parents and guardians, along with students (grades 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11) and staff.. Please complete this survey by December 9, 2016 by visiting the website listed below and use your school’s access code. You may use a computer or a smartphone to access the online survey. • If you need to pick your child up early for any reason other than illness or injury, so as not to interrupt quality instruction time by the teacher, please allow yourself enough time to come to the classroom or other location where he/she is, and help him/her get packed up and ready to go.

• Our Lost and Found is getting full! Please come and look at our Lost and Found rack to see if you can claim any missing items. Some items that have been unclaimed since September are due to be donated on December 9 so please come and check before then! Please label outerwear with your child’s name so that if something is left on the playground we can get it back to the correct student.
